On the morning of July 8, 2024, Russia's military forces unleashed a barrage of missiles across Ukraine, striking the capital city of Kyiv and several other regions. The most devastating attack was on a children's hospital in central Kyiv.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, "Russian terrorists again massively attacked Ukraine with missiles. Different cities were targeted: Kyiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk." Zelenskyy reported that "more than 40 missiles of different types" were fired, damaging residential buildings, and infrastructure, and striking the Okhmatdyt children's hospital.
The newly reconstructed ward of Okhmatdyt, one of Kyiv's oldest pediatric hospitals, was largely destroyed in the attack. Andriy Yermak, the head of Zelenskyy's office, stated that the Russians "purposefully attacked the children today."
Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed that at least seven people were killed and 25 injured in the Kyiv strikes alone. Serhiy Popko, the head of the Kyiv regional military administration, described "debris and missiles" causing "massive destruction and fires in eight districts of Kyiv."
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said, "Patients of the children's hospital are being evacuated to other hospitals in Kyiv." In total, the widespread Russian attacks across Ukraine on that day left 20 people dead and more than 50 injured, according to Klymenko.
"Today, the country felt not fear, but even more rage and hatred. There will be an answer for terror against civilians and children," Klymenko added.
This latest assault is part of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022. Since then, the unprovoked war has caused immense suffering and destruction throughout the country. Attacks on civilian infrastructure and the targeting of children have become tragically common.
The strike on the Kyiv Children's Hospital has drawn international condemnation. World leaders have denounced Russia's actions as war crimes, demanding accountability. However, the Putin regime has shown no signs of backing down or ending its brutal campaign in Ukraine.
As the conflict drags on, the Ukrainian people continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience and resolve in the face of relentless Russian aggression. They remain determined to defend their homeland and freedom, no matter the cost.
The assault on the Kyiv Children's Hospital is a stark reminder of the horrific human toll of this war. It is a tragic testament to the Putin regime's disregard for international law and the sanctity of human life. The international community must continue to stand with Ukraine and hold Russia accountable for its atrocities.
