Russia tells US ambassador it will retaliate over Sevastopol missile strike

Russia has accused the United States of carrying out a "barbaric" attack in Crimea using US-supplied missiles, resulting in the deaths of at least four individuals, including children, and injuring 151 others.

The Russian Foreign Ministry met with US Ambassador Lynne Tracy on Monday, alleging that the US is engaging in a "proxy war" and warning that retaliatory actions will be taken. Since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Moscow has consistently asserted that it is engaged in a proxy war with the West. US Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller stated on Monday that the US provides weapons to Ukraine to defend its sovereignty, expressing regret over any civilian casualties.

The Kremlin has stated that the recent US decision allowing Ukraine to use supplied weapons on Russian territory risks escalation and will have "consequences." The Russian Ministry of Defence reported that the Ukrainian attack on the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula involved five US-supplied Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles, with four being intercepted and the fifth exploding midair. The ministry claimed that US experts had set the missile flight coordinates using information from US spy satellites. The US, which began supplying Ukraine with missiles earlier this year, has not responded, and there has been no immediate reaction from Kyiv.

In a statement on Monday, Russia's Foreign Ministry warned that Washington's actions "will not go unanswered" as it summoned the US ambassador, emphasizing that response measures will be taken. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov condemned the attack as "absolutely barbaric" and stated that Moscow will respond to US involvement.

You should ask my colleagues in Europe, and above all in Washington … why their governments are killing Russian children,” he suggested to reporters present.

‘Consequences’

Peskov also referred to statements made by Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the arming of countries for potential strikes on Western targets. Last week, a military alliance agreement was reached with North Korea, causing concern among Western allies.

Russian officials have recently cautioned that the conflict in Ukraine is escalating towards its most perilous phase yet. Putin has consistently highlighted the dangers of a broader conflict involving the world's nuclear powers.

However, directly accusing the US of a fatal assault on Crimea - a region annexed by Russia in 2014 and now considered Russian territory, despite being recognized as part of Ukraine by most of the international community - represents a significant escalation.

"We are fully aware of who is responsible for this," Peskov stated, emphasizing that the suppliers, operators, and sources of information for the weapons used in Ukraine are clear.

"The United States' involvement in the conflict, resulting in the deaths of innocent Russians, will not go without consequences," Peskov remarked. "The exact repercussions, only time will reveal."
