Putin's navy faces new enemy as Ukraine poised with elite stealth attack submarine

Ukrainians are currently putting Vladimir Putin's navy to the test with a new stealth submarine, resulting in significant losses for Russia's Black Sea fleet. Since the war began in February 2022, Kyiv estimates that approximately one-third of the fleet has been either sunk or destroyed. Among the casualties are notable vessels like Putin's flagship, the Moskva guided missile cruiser, and the more recent loss of the Konstantin Olshansk amphibious landing ship.

The recently developed Kronos attack submarine, armed with torpedoes and mines, poses a significant threat to Russia, effectively keeping them at a distance.

Created by the Ukrainian company Highlands Systems in the United Arab Emirates, the Kronos submarine can accommodate 10 special forces soldiers and a pilot. With dimensions of nine meters by 7.4 meters, this vessel utilizes the 'Black Scorpion' torpedo system, manufactured in Italy, which boasts an impressive range of 3,000 meters.

In terms of speed, the Kronos submarine can reach up to 50mph on the water's surface and 31mph while submerged. It can dive to a maximum depth of 250 meters.

The Kronos submarine is powered by a hybrid engine that combines an electric battery with a diesel system. Additionally, it is equipped with a 36-hour air supply, allowing for extended special operations missions. Onboard, you will find state-of-the-art reconnaissance devices, including an underwater drone and a quadcopter for gathering aerial intelligence.

Sea tests have been conducted for the past year, according to a representative from Highland Systems. The spokesperson stated that the sub has been thoroughly tested and is currently undergoing modernization and upgrades following the results. "We are in the process of installing a more powerful and quieter engine, as well as electric batteries," they added.

While the company cannot confirm any Ukrainian deployment at this time, they have other countries' customers who are prepared to place orders.

The spokesperson confirmed that the upgrades to the vessel are anticipated to be finished by September.
