Zelensky says world can't wait till US election to take action to repel Putin

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the need for decisive action before the U.S. presidential election in November to counter Russia's offensive against Ukraine. Speaking at the NATO summit, Zelensky urged for greater support during this critical period in America's political calendar.

"It's time to step out of the shadows, make strong decisions, act, and not wait for November or any other months to descend. We must be strong and uncompromising together," Zelensky stated.

Addressing his message to Republicans in Washington, he called for unwavering support in defending democracy and standing against Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelensky has been skillful in navigating international relations, consistently pushing for the military aid Ukraine needs. His visit to Washington coincided with a new commitment of aid, including dozens of air defense systems promised by President Joe Biden and NATO allies. However, the upcoming U.S. election could bring a change in power, and Zelensky expressed hope that American support would remain steady.

Speaking at the Reagan Institute, Zelensky aimed to reassure his audience, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, about the continuity of U.S. policy toward Ukraine. He acknowledged the potential impact of a Donald Trump victory, a known NATO skeptic, but remained hopeful that U.S. support for Ukraine would not waver. Zelensky highlighted his previous meetings with Trump, although they did not occur during the current conflict with Russia, which he believes is crucial to truly understand if support can be counted on.

Zelensky’s visit comes amid fresh aid announcements and a supportive Republican-dominated audience, but his goal of NATO membership for Ukraine remains unachieved. NATO members are reluctant to admit Ukraine while it is engaged in active hostilities with Russia, fearing broader conflict involvement. Zelensky, who has often had to plead for aid, continues to advocate for his country in the face of significant challenges.

At the NATO summit, Zelensky navigated a complex political landscape as Biden demonstrated his leadership. Trump, on the other hand, has criticized NATO allies and raised concerns about continued U.S. support. Despite these challenges, Biden announced further military support for Ukraine, including powerful Patriot systems.

Zelensky's efforts are underscored by recent Russian bombardments on Kyiv, highlighting the urgent need for defensive aid. Despite delays in aid approval, countries like Germany have reiterated their support for Ukraine. However, NATO membership for Ukraine remains off the table until the conflict is resolved. Instead, NATO will provide a "bridge to membership," outlining specific reforms Ukraine must complete.

While NATO membership is seen by many in Ukraine as essential for future security, the ongoing conflict and persistent issues like corruption have led to frustration and skepticism. Zelensky, despite his international success, faces declining popularity at home due to these challenges.
